One Time, One Life is a powerful work on resilience, vision, and lifelong service, tracing the remarkable journey of Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, the Grand Mufti of India, from his early life, achievements, and challenges to a legacy that shaped and continues to shape numerous lives.
The first-ever English biography of the Sheikh, One Time, One Life, is an outcome of immense effort and seven years of in-depth research by the author Salam Kolikkal and the co-authors Yasar Arafath, Shabeer M.K., Ahammed Junaid N.P., and Athila Hussain.
An Islamic scholar par excellence, the Grand Mufti explored the rich tradition of Islamic thought while equally acknowledging the significance of contemporary knowledge. His approach emphasised religious understanding, but he also stressed modern education, social development, and interfaith harmony, all of which are relevant for a progressive society. Through this balanced perspective, he emerged as a global voice advocating unity, compassion, and purposeful living.
The work begins with his early life; losing his father at the age of twelve, he experienced the emotional reality of being a yatim (orphan). This personal struggle became the foundation of his future vision, the creation of Markaz Orphanage – an institution specifically aimed at nurturing and supporting children who have lost their fathers.
The book highlights his leadership in transforming Markaz into a unique and vibrant centre for education and community development. His commitment to equal access to education and employment opportunities reflects his broader mission to uplift society. He has played an important role in empowering Indian Muslims – over more than two decades, he travelled extensively across India, engaging directly with communities to understand their real conditions. This grassroots connection strengthened his efforts to empower and guide them through their challenges.
This biography explores documenting his life journey by sharing his teachings, experiences, and contributions to global society in terms of education, unity, and services. Additionally, he was conferred with the title of Grand Mufti of India, which is an acknowledgement of his influence and leadership in the Islamic scholarly community.
One Time, One Life is more than a biography confined to one individual or community. Communicating a universal language of hope, courage, and compassion, the book offers insightful understanding of Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad’s true leadership that inspires millions to look beyond themselves and dedicate their lives to the service of others. It stands as a testament to the idea that a single life, driven by purpose and empathy, can create a lasting legacy that shapes the future of generations.
